This year’s Weekend is bringing us one of the most renowned war photographers, Jan Grarup, who believes that photojournalism is the best and most effective tool when it comes to telling dramatic and challenging stories. Grarup will provide Weekend visitors with a unique insight into his photography concept, as well as the personal challenges he had to confront after years of capturing war zones and natural disasters.
Throughout his career, Grarup has received numerous prestigious awards, including eight World Press Photography Awards and the special Leica Oskar Barnack Award, to name just a few. He has been nominated five times for Photojournalist of the Year, as well as for Best Photography of the Year, and twice for Best Humanistic Photography by the W. Eugene Smith Foundation. He secured the VISA D’OR for his reporting on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, and in 2022, his documentation of an overlooked crisis in Colombia earned him the SONY World Photo Award from among 340 thousand submitted photographs.
Furthermore, Jan Grarup, a versatile talent, has penned several books, among them ‘Where the Iron Crosses Grow – Memoirs of a War Photographer’ and ‘And Then There Was Silence.’ Later this year, we anticipate the release of his latest work, ‘While We Bleed,’ an exploration of the conflict in Ukraine, co-authored with Danish journalist Adam Holm.
Therefore, don’t miss the lecture by this absolute master of photography, who employs his lens to convey the less glamorous but crucial life stories, aiming to raise awareness and inspire change. To view his remarkable photographs, click on the link.
