HOW MUCH FOR SOME CULTURE?

Culture is no longer seen as a cost or a national obligation, even in less developed countries. It is now recognized as a powerful industry that generates revenue and serves as a strategic weapon for shaping a country’s image and influencing other nations. After the era of American popular culture, which inundated the world in the 20th century, strengthening American global influence, we are now witnessing the impact of Turkish soap operas, Korean pop culture, and the rise of so-called ‘small cultures.’ However, culture, often in the pursuit of profit and catering to trends, can sometimes transform into something less cultured. Can trap replace standard music? How can we connect with younger generations? In Croatia and the surrounding region, where culture is often seen as a necessary expense, how can we transform it into an exportable product? Are we ready to embrace new forms of cultural expression? What would life be like without culture? Does culture have the support of institutions and corporations, and is it an expenditure or an investment? Should we commercialize every aspect of culture? How can we package and present culture more intelligently to the market, and which cultural products can captivate the world? We will attempt to answer these and other questions in our ‘Half an Hour of Culture’ session at Weekend.
