They are the ones who do the job of public institutions when those institutions fail to do so. Sometimes they become news themselves, because the job carries its own risks; no one wants to become the target of investigative journalism. At a time when journalism lives off instant and superficial content, they are the ones that newsrooms turn to in order to go deeper and more studiously into a story. They say that if you make one phone call it’s not investigative journalism. If you make a few calls it’s not investigative journalism either. Even if you make dozens of calls you’re still not quite there yet. If you call so many times that you lose track completely, then you’re on your way to becoming one.
